Don’t Let The Cold Break Your Bodily Mould

This winter, don’t let the cold weather affect your regular workout routine. Sure, this is a lot easier said than done, considering it’s negative 8 and your car won’t start. But perhaps it’s the perfect time of the year to ask for a home gym, or elliptical from your loved one? But for most of us, this is a luxury that we simply cannot afford. The simplest solution would be to join a health club or local gym.

This can be one of the most significant things to do during the cold months. Joining a gym not only gives you the ability to stay in shape, but it also diversifies your daily routine, removing unwanted stress and boredom from your life. Similarly, it gives those of us looking for new relationships the ability to meet new people and explore those others that also share interest in exercise and health.

You see, during winter people have a tendency to eat fattening foods, drink more coffee/tea, and ultimately pursue activities that don’t involve going outside. Subsequently, holiday parties are a huge contributing factor to weight gain and increased appetite. More technically speaking, during the winter months we’re exposed to less sunlight, which will soon lead to fluctuations in hormones and chemicals in the brain. At the same time, the blood vessels in our skin begin to contract, driving blood towards the center of the body which influences our digestive systems.

Combined, all of the above factors above severely hinder our ability to lose inches off our waistline. Yet, the biggest obstacle is simply leaving your house. Some of the best advice I can gave to getting your butt to the local gym involves the following:

Clothing

Be sure to dress as warm as possible before heading off to the gym. This includes warm-ups, along with advanced gym clothing like under armor for greater protection. Similarly, it’s okay to change at the gym; don’t be ashamed to show off your body in the locker room – This can be a great impediment for a lot of people. The warmer you are before your workout, the easier the transition into full cardio or strength training. Tighter clothing will also help keep warmth in, but if you’re not a fan, or too self-conscious, sweatshirts/pants are an excellent way to go!

Food

It’s almost guaranteed that as human beings, we’re going to eat more during the winter. But eating at the right times (small meals every three hours), while eating the right foods will ultimately give you a better workout and drive you to stay longer. This means foods that are high in protein, along with carbohydrate infused beverages like Gatorade. Although it may not get you to the gym, it will certainly keep you from missing out – Calcium and Potassium are very important for nutritional health and avoiding sickness. Be sure to invest in foods high in both. Also, try substituting some of your every day foods for things like almonds, peanuts, dates and raisins – These are high in protein and natural sugars. They will certainly give you an extra drive during the day. On a side note, they also are great for your digestive system. If not properly maintained, bowel movements can cause distress and back pain, lowering workout motivation.

Water

Drinking adequate amounts of water will also help with digestion and acts as a preventive measure for muscle aches and back pain. And most importantly, it helps with weight loss.

Muscles

Lastly, be sure to stretch, strengthen, and revive your muscles whenever convenient. This doesn’t have to be at the gym – Use your spare time to stretch your muscles, including the ones in your face. The cold will eventually make you feel achier and tighten everything up. A quirky, yet effective example would be to stretch while in the shower. This is when your core temperature has a chance to rise, allowing for easier stretching.

If you’re already actively involved at a gym, it doesn’t mean that you wont’ gain weight either. Winter’s affects can be quite brutal! Trips the store; walking; playing outside; side-work – This can all be cut in half due to the cold. In order to remedy this, be sure to spend an extra few minutes at the gym, perhaps exploring new exercises. If you abide by these simple stipulations, you’ll find that it’s easy to keep that great summer shape!

Where and when were you born?

Jada Kelly: I was born on December 2, 1981, in Torrance, CA.

What is your profession?

Jada Kelly: I am a middle school Phys. Ed. Teacher and Personal Trainer. I became an NPC Bikini competitor in 2010!

What do you do for fun that does not relate to the sport, do you have any hobbies?

Jada Kelly: I absolutely love to cook! I am always watching the Food Network and trying to find innovative ways to make healthy recipes.

How and when did you get involved in weight training?

Jada Kelly: I started weight training in college, kind of by accident. I needed a job and the gym on campus was hiring. I started there, cleaning machines and putting together the monthly bulletin board. My boss at the time, saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself and helped me get my first aerobics and personal training certifications. I started teaching kickboxing and lifting weights in my sophomore year of college. By my junior year, I was training clients! I loved everything about working out and just wanted to learn as much as I could.

How often do you train and could you give a brief overview of your weekly workout?

Jada Kelly: I usually do about 30-45 min a day of cardio and switch it up often. My cardio includes sprints on the treadmill, jump rope, kickboxing class, indoor cycling and running stairs. I hit the weights about 5 days a week. Mondays are Back and Rear Delts, Tuesdays are Chest, Triceps and Abs, Wednesdays are leg day #1 with a Quad focus, Thursdays are just cardio, Fridays are Shoulders and Biceps, Saturdays are leg day #2 with a Hamstring focus and Sundays are either just cardio or a full rest day depending on how I feel.

How critical is a good diet in this sport and why?

Jada Kelly: Eating right is everything. Well, I believe it makes up about 90% of your success. You must eat correctly to have enough energy to work as hard as I do. Getting enough of the right carbs, keeping sodium low and cutting out refined sugar is the only way to get through your workouts and achieve the “fitness model” look that most bikini competitors are striving for.

What is your favorite workout and why?

Jada Kelly: My favorite workout is a wide, deep squat on the Smith Machine. Great for the Glutes!

Do you train harder for competition preparation versus training in the offseason?

Jada Kelly: I train just as hard in the weight room but I lighten up on cardio. I also adjust my diet to incorporate more fruit and additional complex carbs.

Did you want to compete from the day you started or did you gradually come in to it?

Jada Kelly: I gradually got into competing. My workout buddy at the time was a fitness competitor. She would always tell me that I would love everything about competing from the workouts to the stage. Something clicked in me in January 2010. Not sure if it was the new year or that I had just turned 28 and decided that this was my year. Either way, I started training for my first competition in January 2010.

When and what was your first competition and how did you do?

Jada Kelly: My first competition was the NPC Muscle Contest 2010 Bodybuilding, Figure and Bikini Championships on March 27, 2010 in Culver City, CA. I placed 5th in my class. It was awesome!! I was hooked.

How often do you compete now?

Jada Kelly: I competed in 3 shows in 2010 and plan to do at least 3 in 2011.

Could you list the competitions you have competed in and your placement?

Jada Kelly:

3.27.10 NPC Muscle Contest 2010, Class C Unlimited Bikini, 5th place
7.24.10 NPC Los Angeles Championships, Class C Unlimited Bikini, 7th place
9.11.10 NPC Tournament of Champions, Class D Unlimited Bikini, 1st place

In your opinion what is your best body part?

Jada Kelly: My butt!

Is women’s bodybuilding as respected as men’s bodybuilding or is it criticized more?

Jada Kelly: I think both can be highly controversial and criticized depending on who you are talking to. As far as respect, I believe that Men’s bodybuilding is more widely respected that Women’s bodybuilding. Then again, Men’s bodybuilding has been around a little longer. Once women start being awarded the same amount of money as men in the major competitions, then we can talk about women’s bodybuilding getting the same respect.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Jada Kelly: In ten years, I will be an IFBB bikini pro and able to influence so many more people than I can today!! I will have completed a cookbook full of healthy recipes, have a DVD workout series, and be a mother. I will be doing what I love, dreaming big and knowing my best is yet to come.

Lucy White: I WAS BORN IN SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI. MAY 14, 1974

What is your profession?

Lucy White: I’M A SURGICAL NURSE. JUST FINISHED MY HISTOLOGY DEGREE, AND HAVE A MINOR IN FORENSIC SCIENCE.

Lucy White: I HAVE A HARLEY AND LOVE TO RIDE. I HAVE A SON THAT KEEPS ME EXTREMELY BUSY, AND I’M AN NPC FLORIDA STATE BODYBUILDING JUDGE.

How and when did you get involved in weight training?

Lucy White: I’VE BEEN IN ATHLETICS OF SOME KIND MY WHOLE LIFE BUT MY BROTHER IS THE ONE THAT GOT ME STARTED IN BODY BUILDING. I WAS A MARATHON RUNNER AT 98 LBS BUT AFTER HAVING KNEE SURGERY FOR THE SECOND TIME, I HAD TO GIVE IT UP. SO, I DECIDED TO FOLLOW IN MY BROTHER’S FOOTSTEPS AND HERE I AM TODAY. I STARTED COMPETING IN 1999.

Lucy White: DEPENDS ON WHO YOUR ASKING REALLY. BUT AS A FEMALE, I WOULD SAY NO. IT IS DEFINITELY CRITICIZED BECAUSE JUDGES ARE TIRED OF SEEING FEMALES WITH THAT “HE-SHE” IMAGE. WHEN YOU PICK UP A MUSCLE MAGAZINE, DO YOU SEE IT LOADED WITH FEMALE BODYBUILDERS?....NO. IT’S FULL OF MEN AND BIKINI CHICKS. WHY?? BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT MAKES MONEY!!! I LOVE THE SPORT AND I WILL CONTINUE TO DO IT BECAUSE THERE ARE NOT VERY MANY WOMEN THAT DO, BUT I WILL DO IT WITHOUT CROSSING THAT FINE LINE, STILL KEEPING MY FEMININITY AND SEXY APPEARANCE.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Lucy White: I WOULD LIKE TO WIN MY PRO CARD AND IN 10 YEARS, I WILL JUST BE HITTING MY PRIME. YOU CAN DO NOTHING BUT JUST KEEP GETTING AND LOOKING BETTER AND BETTER!! (MUSCLE MATURITY)
